Before, During and After Grandma Chandler's Funeral

As I said in my last few posts, we are back here now, and with my Grandma's passing we got the wonderful experience of enjoying hosting my family, here where she grew up. In the weeks before they came, [as we weren't sure when exactly she would pass] we enjoyed a few fun things. Educational projects like art work, social studies games, geography, science math and reading [our wall of all our different art lessons is one of my favorite spots in the whole house and I loved our Percy Jackson marathon], fun trips to go along with them like the zoo, or day trips to Mesa Falls and Rexburg for the splash pad and carousel. We cooked and baked, even making my favorite foods like bread and soup dumplings [good first try, room for improvement. The sourdough was perfect though, thanks to the starter I got from Luke]. It was all really fun, and nice to have Lester all to ourselves before he heads out for a long time.

Shortly after that, slowly but surely our family started to make our way here. In the days before the funeral, we got some one on one visiting w my Mom and then with my Aunt Maryann and Uncle Serg. From there, everyone else arrived and for once, we got to be the house full of people and food and loudness and fun, all basking in all the beautiful things that Grandma made possible for us. So much so that I had to warn our neighbors haha. My Mom said that in the 3 times we hosted everyone here, there were at LEAST 20 adults and 20 kids. And it was what I always wanted our house to feel like, the kind of house I grew up in and was worried we'd never get to be.

At the funeral itself, it was beautiful to be able to share memories of her, and also hear about parts of her life that we weren't around for, like her childhood from some of her siblings. I loved seeing the slide show, listening to her stories, seeing her pictures and belongings, and even getting to sing like she enjoyed w others. I loved getting to catch up with family I grew up w, like my cousins, and ones that my Mom grew up w that I met for the first time [in my memory]. It was also fun, as always to see this new generation play. Throughout the trip, there were alot of tears, grateful ones, happy ones, bittersweet sad ones, and more. Lots of warmth. Lots of tears. Lots of laughs. Lots of flowers. Lots of family. Trips to Reed's Dairy, smoking meats, cooking baking and games, outside time, and a day in Island Park where she spent her summers growing up, waterfalls, rainy days, and other good times. Lots of catching up and conversations. I loved all of it. After everyone slowly but surely made their way back to their homes, my Mom stayed an extra day or two, which was wonderful since we got to spend our nights catching up and watching father brown, and visiting for dinner w Chio and her family. We even got to get a date night in for our 11th wedding anniversary knowing the kids were in good hands, watching Scooby Doo, making cookies and being read to by someone who loves them almost as much as we do. We loved watching and listening to the thunder and lightning storms together etc.

In the end, saying goodbye, and watching my Grandma deteriorate from all the beautiful things she was, was really tough. But I have so many years of golden memories with her and from her, so I am happy that she is not in pain anymore. I'm grateful for all she gave me and taught me in my life, and for this one last gift of family time this last month.

Since then, we had a few nice weeks together before enduring some time apart. School started, we've done some art work and baking, fort building, library days, way to many movie nights, activities and visits from friends and are now counting down the days till we are together again. More life ahead for us thanks to her.
