Fun In The Weeks Before Christmas

Here are some highlights of the last few weeks.

-My in laws invited us to tag along with them to Southern CA, where we visited with their college friends the Yuzon's. We had so much fun spending time with them, swimming in the pool, eating the delicious foods they shared with us [the Arroz Caldo and the oysters were particularly delicious] and more. Two of the days we were there we had the chance to go to Disneyland and Universal. We did all the fun things, rides galore [which is better now that the kids are older and able to go on more of them!] at both places, and despite dealing with an obsene amount of crowds made some good memories. My favorite memories were drinking hot butter beer at the Three Broomsticks and checking out Ollivanders, the night time fire works and 'snow' at Disneyland, the Christmas decorations and themed rides [like the Haunted Mansion being Nightmare Christmas], staying till almost closing, and best of all was Star Wars land. The Rise of the Resistance ride in particular had an insane wait time-but imo ended up being worth it. It felt like we were really in the worlds that I grew up watching, especially as everything was to scale. Then later on Smuggler's run sent me over when I got to pilot a ship just like the Millennium Falcon. Bc of the pandemic, there were moments where it felt like some of the Disney magic was missing-but I admit, that world and those rides had me reeling like a kid again. We also stopped by the Santa Monica Pier on our way out for some dinner and fun and it was beautiful.

-We attended the Nutcracker and saw the lights at the place we were married. It was magical and fun.

-We participated in what I hope will be a new tradition from our families heritages when we made a Filipino parole with Sabrina. She brought her A game and showed us how to make it from scratch, and we loved spending the day with her catching up and learning new shared cultural things. It was a blast!

-We got to visit with some more friends when we got together to gush about Kdramas and BTS, play games and catch up at their home and it was such a rejuvenating experience, like it always is with friends. And a few weeks earlier we had got to get together with for Friendsgiving with our families and tow and it was also so good. Again, this is another thing I miss the most about being here-so many deep connections and long term friendships that I have.

-We had celebrated the first day of Hanukkah with Bex and her family who always make us feel so welcome, and we loved participating as they lit the menorah and said the blessing. We also played draedel and enjoyed visiting with them. Later in the week we had latkes with applesauce and sour cream, and our favorite rugelach.

-We hit up some more museums, parks and beaches in the city, like the Contemporary Jewish Art Museum, more Academy of Sciences, the Museum of Modern Art, etc. All of them provided such unique perspectives and different lenses then we've previously looked through, and so that was a good experience.

-We've been able to spend quite a bit of time with my family too! For one, we were able to go to my parents ward Christmas party, where Santa came for a visit and looked suspiciously like Grandpa [according to Isla the shoes were the biggest give away haha.] Apart from some walks and beach meet ups, we've also had wonderful days of Christmas movies, tree decorating, puzzles, crafts, building gingerbread houses, pillow fights with Grandma and jumping on Grandpa, and so on.

-We've been of course indulging our food hobby. Mostly with eating out, a bit with eating in. One fun things was getting to go on a quick date to get delicious late night ramen with Lester, while my inlaws watched the kiddos. Another favorite was checking out La Cocina Market, which I think every single person needs to go to. Their mission is to 'cultivate low-income food entrepreneurs as they formalize and grow their businesses.' We tried delicious foods at the market from all over the world, all while playing giant Connect Four and using their amazing free library. It filled out tummies, but also my soul-with things like when I needed water to fill Talia's bottle, the women who made our from from Sengal, Africa personally boiled water, brought it over till it was just the right temperature, then comforted her and showed books to Bear while I mixed it. All while wearing a mask and telling me about her kids and the story of the food she makes. THIS is why I love it here. THIS is what I miss. Food tells stories, and I love hearing about them all. How it connects as and how it changes us, whether its totally different or the same or what. So good.
