Today we got the rare opportunity to see Daddy at work! He had a call in our area, and we knew they were going to posted here for a while so we met up for some late breakfast and to hang out. It was a lot of fun being able to go inside the rig and see where he spends so many of his hours. We even got to try out some of the things he does for his patients-oxygen for example, and ekg's. It makes me happy that he actually cares enough to show us these things, and is excited when we are around-that he wants us to be a part of not just home, but his work to. His partner for this shift seemed very nice, and it was all around a great experience.

After our visit was over, us girls came home and played in the awesome back yard. It may not be much, but when you consider how it was unusable before, to now, where their is a slide, make shift sandbox with toys, makeshift pool, fire pit and even a little bitty garden, it is pretty great. I think this is yet another reason we're lucky to have Lester in our lives. He takes his work seriously, both in an official sense but also in his job as a husband, father and provider for us. I appreciate that when I give him projects like fixing up that space, even if it takes a bit of time, he doesn't just blow it off or do the bare minimum. Instead he goes all out-he takes the time and effort to really think about and respond to what we would need and like, and then he does it. I know this is one of the millions of ways he shows us he loves us, and I love him all the more for it. We are some lucky over ladies here.

So that was our day! Hope yours was good as well!

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet."

I've been thinking about this Shakespeare quote a lot lately as we've been trying to pick out a name for our new little girl. Most of the time I agree with him-I think about people or things with strange names and feel that it shouldn't limit them-they are more then a title. But  then I think about that what Anne meant when she said "I read in a book once that a rose by any other name would smell as sweet but I couldn't bring myself to believe it. I don't believe a rose would be as nice if it was thistle or a skunk cabbage." I think she makes a good point to-anyone CAN rise above their names, but if I were to name my kid Bruiser or Killer, you gotta admit, before meeting them you may be a little predisposed to not let your kid play with her/him haha.

So ultimately I've decided ideally, it is a combination of the two. We should teach our children that they are more then just a name or a label-that they are wonderful, smart, kind and beautiful regardless of this. But at the same time, we should try to pick out a name that we think would not only suit them if possible, but also give them every advantage in life-a name they can be proud to have.

For this reason, I am going to do a post like this every time we officially have and name a new child. Whether or not our kids love or hate their names, I want them to know why we chose what we did, and the legacy behind them. I hope they will love their names as much as we do, and even if they don't, at least they will know that we did put some thought into it.

So here we go.

Adelaide McKenzie

Adelaide [Addy] is the name of our first sweet daughter. As everyone knows, Lester and I met, dated and fell in love in high school. Over the years, and the more serious we got about each other, the more we'd imagine our future together. Of course this included children, and we daydreamed about what we would name our kids if the stars aligned and we ended up together [I know, lame mushy stuff right? But there it is!] On the list for girls there was only really one name-Sydney. As the years past, we went our separate ways, grew up some, and eventually reunited. When we finally got to the point where we were married and expecting, we remembered this name. But for some reason, even before she was born, we never felt like this name suited her for some reason. So we went back to the drawing board. We kept running into walls and found that the only two things we agreed on were names that had specific meaning to us, and geographical names of all things. Once we realized this, we came upon Adelaide. It hit both of these criteria and from the second we found it, we felt like it was meant for our growing girl.

Lester grew up in Sydney Australia, and has many fond memories of his life there. But his life as member of our creed was made possible [in part] by the two missionaries who taught his parents the gospel and baptized them. One of them was originally from Adelaide, Australia. Since the two things Lester and I cherish above all are our gospel/religion and our family, we thought Adelaide was a great potential name. It intertwines both of these things perfectly.

This past year, I finally had the chance to meet these men and some of their family members. It was a very special moment all of us. I think especially for my in laws, as they were able to show them their friends the fruits of their labors as young missionaries-a family still deeply rooted in the gospel so many years later, with a grand child named as proof of that. I'm glad Addy can have such a beautiful place to think about when she learns more about her name, but above all that she has such wonderful examples and people to relate to as part of that as well. I hope her personal conversion story will be as beautiful, long lasting and wonderful as all of her ancestors, family and friends are and that she will be happy with the name we picked for her.

We love our Adelaide and from the second we saw her, we knew we were right. That this name was perfectly suited for such a lively, beautiful and unique girl.

So Addy-this is the story of how you got your name. We love you.

If you know my sister Samantha [or basically anyone else in my family for that matter..] then you know that her prom day has come and gone. It was everything that she hoped for and more, and I am glad we were here to help with/watch this special moment for her. There are so many birthdays and occasions I missed over the years after leaving for college, so it make the ones that we are present for all that more meaningful.

She looked absolutely radiant from the inside and out and her date was just as handsome and dapper as he was thoughtful and attentive. I am glad she is surrounded by such good people. Anyways, she was beaming both before and after and I am sure we will be hearing about this one for a long time-well-at least until her high school graduation this weekend haha.

Here are some of the fun little things we've been up to lately. While Hillary and Audrey were here, we were able to spend a lot of time together [I'll put a bit more about that another time]. One of those nights, when everyone else had school and church commitments, we decided to finally try out Off The Grid [a food truck fair of sorts] since it was close by. Although it was cold, it was so much fun sampling all the different foods, listening to live music, watching our girls enjoy each other while we did the same. I wish we lived closer so it could become a more regular thing, but at least the moments we do get to spend together are special I suppose.

[Daddy was hungry..plus who wouldn't want to nibble that delicious adorable little face?]

My youngest sister Samantha has been keeping us all on our toes with all the exciting accomplishments going on in her life right now. This week, she received her Personal Progress award, her Young Women's Medallion, which is much like the equivalent of an Eagle Scout Award for Boy Scouts. It takes lots of time, work and effort and after years of working towards it, she received recognition for it. Then, later this week she has prom, and high school graduation comes next week. Then she is off to Utah to spend and exciting few weeks living it up with family and friends. We are so happy and so proud to see the ways she has grown, and are excited to watch her continue to do so. Congrats to Sam!

We have been spending a lot of time outside with all the heat and sunshine we've had here lately. This is one of the many reasons I'm so glad we've cleaned up the backyard. Its definitely been a lot of work, and it has a way to go, but we have enjoyed starting a little garden, BBQing, and most of all, giving Addy a place to play on the days Mommy feels to yucky to go out much. We play ball, practice letters and play with sidewalk chalk [we're currently on letter J] and enjoy her slide, etc.We have yet to buy a kiddie pool, but it is next on our list. Until then, Uncle Luke has been a great sport about playing with her in her little makeshift 'pool'. He is such a good sport, and she wants to be just like him.

[goofing off, taking pictures with Luke and Grandpa]
[copying Sam and Luke who were getting a friends helps with hemming a dress/pants etc].

Other then that, just pregnancy and work work work for us. Baby and is FAR more active then Addy ever was, and has been giving me Braxton Hicks [false labor] every other day or so. But she still needs to bake some more, so hopefully she can stay put for a bit longer. I have moved on from my lemon bar cravings to these Madeline cookies. I though this picture was funny bc I didn't realize until afterwards that my bump wanted to be in the picture. Goood times haha.

Don't remember if I mentioned or not, but Lester will be starting school again [a post bad program through SF state] in June so that will be a change up-hopefully a good one. Were so lucky to have such a hard working husband/Daddy to support and love us. We're excited for this new adventure and are sure it will be a good thing for us all in the long run. So thats whats up with us lately!

Love them.

In case the social media world hasn't informed you already, it is Mother's Day. I wanted to also take a second to gush about the mothers in my life, the importance of this role and how much I appreciate being able to hold this role myself now. However, I know I can tend to be a little long winded at times [this is the part where you say, "What? You? NEVER!" like you mean it haha] so I think I will just narrate it with pictures and captions.

There is no surer affirmation of divine roles then that exhibited by my own Mom. I can think of no better example of the consistency and unconditional love she naturally gives, and I will forever be trying to learn from her and make sure my children feel as loved and important and smart as she has always made me feel.

She has loved her job as a Mom, and has always helped me to see that although extremely difficult at times, it is the best job in the world. As seen below, I have always wanted to be a Mom like her-although I may have wavered watching her make her daily morning sickness sacrifice in the mornings for a good portion of my childhood haha. Still, she enjoyed motherhood and I wanted to be like that.

To this day, I still love and need my Mother and am happy to say that I am daily getting to put these things into practice with my own sweet daughters. There are no words to express how much I love love LOVE being her daughter, and my babies Mother.

I am also blessed and grateful to have the wonderful husband I do. He loves me, respects me and does his best to take care of me our family so that I might in return take care of them. I don't have to ask him to do this, he just does. I'm grateful for my mother in law and the things she has done in her life to help him on this journey.

I'm grateful to my Dad for appreciating my Mom as well. When I was about 10 he started a tradition called 'The Mother's Day Cafe'. We put out the best china, put curtains up around the kitchen, and made a restaurant while cooking a fancy dinner. He had us dress in serving attire to give my Mom a night off of cooking and serve her and her Mom the best we could give them. We did this every year since then. This was my first year home having earned a chance to actually sit at the table! Lester helped in the kitchen and it was quite the experience. This, coupled with the flowers and other goodies from Lester made the day very special. I am lucky to have the men I do in my lives who support me in my role as a Mom.

I guess I will just finish this post on this note. In the Bible [Proverbs 31:28-29] it speaks of a virtuous women-a mother to be specific. It says "Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellent them all." I know that in this life, not every women will be a mother. But we can all be the kind of person who provides love, a safe haven and blesses the life of others. THIS is what motherhood is all about. So to all the wonderful women out there, with or without children-thank you for all the millions of times you have provided that for me. And for my children-thank you for letting be your Mom-I truly am as the scripture says-blessed.

We have had an eventful past few weeks! First, my sister Mariah came into town with her now fiancé, Ross. Luckily, he somehow managed to pull off a surprise [to no one but her might I add!] proposal like he had planned. We are so happy for them-they asked Lester to take some pictures for them, and in doing so we were able to see the wonderful love they have for each other and how happy they are to be on the road to eternity together. Hooray for love!

After they headed back to school, we were lucky enough to have my sister Hillary and her cute daughter Audrey visit. They are still here, and we are loving having companions to hang with during the day while everyone is at work or school. It makes me wish we lived closer, especially as the girls love each other so much. They are already in cahoots it seems with the way they conspire to help each other get pacifiers and snacks, and it is a joy to see Addy trying to be sweet and cuddle/hold and share with another little one. Her new sister will be in good hands!

While she is here we've been enjoying unusually good weather so we've been taking advantage of the sunshine by getting together with some friends at the beach, parks and other outside fun. We were recently given a hand me down double stroller, which is perfect with them here. We especially enjoyed using it in a walk fundraising and increasing awareness for Autism. It ended up being more like a mini fair or carnival then a walk, which was great. All together, its been a blast, and we are so happy we have another week to spend with them.
